I have become used to designing and figuring out ways to fit things and make a small room work. I have developed a lot of tricks and learned ways to make a small space feel cozy and bigger. The easiest thing is to find your aesthetic and color wheel of what makes you feel best, safe, and comfortable. A great place to unwind, and fell relaxed.
~ IKEA is a great place to get affordable basics for a room like dresser or desk. These items are not very unique but they are great quality for how affordable they are. Very slick furniture and goes with everything around it. The dresser and side table I have in my bedroom is linked below.
IKEA is another great place to get little nick-nicks from, fake plants, storage holders, anything to add a little pop of color etc.

~Putting a large mirror obviously will always make a room look bigger, but I still think that is is important to mention. I have a more neutral color vibe so I have a gold mirror, it is very large and overlooks my whole bedroom.

~Placing things abasing the wall, for example your bed. This will open up a larger space in the room that you can use to hangout or anything you choose, but will make your room look larger.
I hope these few tips help for designing a smaller room, I can always give more If you contact me going into greater detail.
