How to survive your Freshman Year in College~ What I Learned

Going into my Sophomore year of college I have found myself reflecting on what I have learned my freshman year. So many different feelings come along with the process of making the transition from High School to college, from feeling excited about all the freedom and independence to getting nervous about the social scene and the academics. I experienced both sides of this story, I was extremely excited to be going into college just because I knew it was so much better the high school, however, I was scared for the social scene I go to a somewhat commuting school and usually students at these types of schools are there to go to class, get their grades, and leave. There is no effort to make friends or hangout. The friends you make in college will be for sure some of your most generous loving and best friends for the rest of your life, I have known my group of friends for one year and I already know I will have them on my wedding day. Sometimes things come when they are not expected to, and that is exactly the way I have met my best friends. academics can be a different story, this is the part of college that can be the hardest. Getting through your first semester can be rough from transitioning from High School since the studying and learning process is so different from what it is in college. I had a super hard time learning how to study properly and what works best for me in college and luckily I found a professor who was willing to help me and give me tips while also teach me the best ways to get good grades on Exams in college. The best advice I can give for this is just always ahead, look at the lectures a day or week ahead so that when you go to class you already know the gist of the material and what the professor is talking about, now you are just listening to the lecture and adding onto your education on the topic. Another thing would be to use your resources! Office hours are a lifesaver, your professor knowing you on a personal level and for them to see you make an effort and go further than just showing up to class can help later in the semester when they are deciding whether or not they want to round your B to an A. The last tip I have for academics, would be use your books and get in study groups, as many times as you read and write the powerpoint down if you can't teach the topic to someone off the topic of your head you need to read the book and actually understand it. You should be able to take the test information and teach someone else all about it, that is how you will know that you fully understand the information.
