Congratulations, on getting an interview first off! Getting an interview may not seem like an important step to some or even extremely stressful. However, receiving an invitation to personally meet with a recruiter from a company is a big deal. It means out of all the applicants they receive, they choose you to meet with and take their time to see if you will make a good addition to their company. In some cases, you have to go through several interviews before getting to the final round and meeting with a real person in live time to discuss further interest in the position you applied for. There are several aspects of the interview process that is nerve wracking and intimidating, to say the least however being prepared is all you can do at the end of the day. I am going to share some of my experiences on how to be prepared for an interview and different things to do, to make yourself feel more prepared and confident throughout it.
1.) Research the company thoroughly.
You want to know as much as you can about the company you are interviewing with. When was it founded? What is their mission statement, and what are they in the news for lately? Are they keeping up with trends in society such as the shift to EV if it is automotive or regarding the environment in general? Knowing everything you can about the company will make it much easier to talk in the interview about different aspects of the job and nothing will be a surprise to you. It will also help you at the end to ask questions.
Furthermore, research the position you applied for. Get to know your potential job title, what your tasks will be etc. By knowing this information you can think of characteristics that you can convey to your recruiter or HR rep that you will be a good fit for the job and addition to the team. (Ie: this is what the job consists of and entails… here are examples of why I would be a good candidate for these tasks x,y, and z)
2.) Confirm the date and time of your interview. The worst thing that could happen is you are late for your interview or you forget about it. This is not a good first impression of the company and they may not meet with you at all after this. Put the date in your calendar and planner etc.
If your interview is over zoom you want to have professional background on your computer. You also want to have the most reliable internet connection possible. This is not always in our control, however, even if it means going to a private room at a coffee shop or a library where the internet is stable rather than your home it is worth it. You do not want your internet or connection breaking up and going out during an important interview.
3.) Research your interviewer. The most professional way of doing this is by viewing their Linkedln profile. You want to get familiar with their job title and their background throughout the company. Also, during the interview address each interviewer with their name when talking. (Ie: “Amanda you mentioned …”)
4.) Have good questions at the end of the interview. At the end of an interview, they will most defiantly ask you if you have any questions, and asking relevant and intelligent questions makes you stand out and be remembered. A good question is to ask “What have previous employees in the position I am interviewing for done to be successful in the job tasks” you can also ask questions specific to the company such as automotive, supplier-related, databases or software, etc.
Good Luck!
